How to Pick the Ideal Kitchen Counter Color for Your Kitchen

Brian M • Jan 20, 2023

One important aspect of kitchen design that cannot be ignored is the countertops. From water and sauce spills to scratches, there is so much going on on countertops that they appear to be naturally crowded. So, if you're already devoting a significant portion of your renovation budget to countertops, why not make a statement?

Choosing the right design, patterns, and colors to complement your style is equally important and difficult. That’s why we’re making it a lot easier for you to figure this out. The following are some guidelines that we usually share with our clients to help them choose the right color for your kitchen countertops. These tips offer a variety of colors for you to choose from when designing your own kitchen.

First Things First: What are the Undertones of your Kitchen?

When it comes to decorating, undertones can either be your best friend or your worst nightmare. To be friends with undertones, you have to know the difference between them. Having cherry wood cabinets will make your blue or green countertops appear very red or even pink. If your floor or cabinetry has a yellow or orange undertone, gray or blue countertops will intensify it. White cabinets will have the same effect, too. Just remember that it’s important to understand the color wheel in order to avoid a color clash with your new countertops.

Find Complementary Colors

You might find hints on the undertones of your cabinets to help you choose a complementary color style for your kitchen countertop. For instance, the red secondary hues in your cherry or mahogany kitchen cabinets in natural light can provide a striking contrast to the sage or blueish gray countertops in your kitchen.

This is a useful method for choosing the appropriate color scheme to create the ideal mood in your kitchen and countertops. This is also an easy way to spruce up traditional kitchens. For your island, go for light or neutral hues. This will give your kitchen a modern, sleek and contemporary curb appeal.

Try Matching Contrasting Tones

Try combining two distinct countertop colors to get a modern, sophisticated kitchen. A kitchen with counters that are all the same color can appear cluttered or overly busy. In order to create visual interest and still achieve the intended style for your kitchen, pair two counters with different tones. Kitchen countertops put together in lighter tones might provide the impression of a "floating" kitchen island.

Go for Adjacent Hues on the Color Wheel

When you choose adjacent colors for your kitchen countertop and cabinetry, you can bring out natural warmth and glow in your cool and contemporary kitchen. You can exude natural warmth by selecting an orange or red color undertone for your kitchen countertop if your cabinetry is red-orange.

Choose a Streamlined Color Tone

The majority of modern kitchen remodeling focuses on a minimalist and streamlined design. White, gray, black, and sage are currently popular kitchen color tones. The cool tones and colors of your kitchen counter and cabinets must be monochrome to create a streamline effect in your kitchen renovation. If you choose white kitchen countertops, your upper and lower cabinetry can be white or off-white in color.

This idea allows you to achieve a minimalist and modern aesthetic in your kitchen space. Similarly, choose long-lasting and fashionable countertop materials such as granite, marble, and quartz.

Warm Things Up with Wood

The majority of homeowners prefer a contemporary kitchen theme that includes pale tones or white kitchen cabinets. Going for wood color tones in your kitchen countertop is an excellent choice if you want a natural glow and warmth in your modern kitchen.

What other advantages do wooden kitchen countertops provide? First, it creates an atmosphere of intimacy and coziness. Second, it makes the ambiance rustic and homey. Finally, it is an earthy accent to a contemporary background.

Don’t Forget! Your Cabinets, Backsplash, and Kitchen Accessories Matter

Countertops and cabinets go together like salt and pepper. They can give your kitchen a very appealing look if done correctly. As a result, you must be extremely careful when picking your countertops, keeping in mind that they should complement rather than detract from the kitchen cabinets.

If you have dark/gray cabinets or black cabinets, you can do a classic light and dark mix, or you can go with dark cabinets and countertops against a light themed kitchen. If your cabinets have a wood texture, you can complement them with green quartz or granite countertops to add a splash of color to your kitchen.

One rule of thumb is to select a primary color for your backsplash, cabinetry, or countertops and then experiment with the same shade and undertones of that color throughout the rest of the room.

One common practice is to choose the countertop as the main focal point and then design your backsplash with the same material (optional) and different shades of that material. However, keep the overall theme of your kitchen in mind at all times. If your kitchen has a dark theme, choose a light focal color for the countertops and all-white kitchen cabinets, and vice versa! You can also mix things up by using natural stone.

Colors used on kitchen countertops should also go well with kitchen appliances and rugs. The stainless steel appliances in your kitchen can be painted to match your countertop color if you want an updated look. Also, it’s easier to see dark pieces in the kitchen if they are paired with a lighter colored countertop.

Bottomline: Your dream kitchen's countertops should reflect your style and personality

Inspiration can be found in a variety of scenarios. But consider your favorite colors or what you like in general when choosing the right kitchen countertop color. Don’t hesitate to embrace your creativity and uniqueness when it comes to your kitchen’s aesthetics. The right countertop color can create a unique kitchen that reflects your personality.
